Five simple practices to stay well this winter.
We are on the cusp of winter and facing a festive period like no other with new lockdown restrictions. With much social interaction being unavailable, and many juggling working from home with family life, it is more important than ever to look after our wellbeing in a way that is quick, simple and nourishing.
Here are five simple ways that you can bring some wellbeing into your daily routine;
Sprinkle seeds on your meals - in chinese medicine the winter is a time of Yin dominance and foods such as stews, beans, oils and seeds are recommended to protect against the invasion of external pathogens. For a quick fix, sprinkle a few sesame seeds on your soup at lunch.
Nourish your skin - When the weather turns windy and cold our skin takes the brunt of it. As the largest organ of the body and our first line of defence against infection, the skin is top priority when it comes to preventative wellbeing. The Ayurvedic practice of daily self massage is often performed using warm sesame oil, but if you don’t have time for a full body application try taking five minutes each evening to slather your feet with oil, pop on some cosy socks and massage the remaining oil into your hands and elbows.
Wrap up warm - When it’s cold the head, neck and extremities are quickly affected, sometimes causing tension and reduced circulation. What better excuse to infuse some hygge into your wellbeing routine than by grabbing all those cosy hats, scarves, jumpers, or even a poncho - I defy anyone to not feel happier when wearing a poncho.
Diffuse essential oils - Even if you don’t own a diffuser this is a quick and easy practice to add to your morning routine. Simply put a few drops in a bowl of warm water and leave it near a radiator. Eucalyptus oil is a favourite of mine: it is uplifting, clears sluggishness and provides support to the respiratory system.
Create balance with spice - In Ayurveda the winter is dominated by the Kapha dosha, characterised by cold, dampness and lethargy. Counteract this with light, warming soups and dhals at mealtimes or for a quicker option add some turmeric, ginger, cardamom or nutmeg to your latte or hot chocolate.
Stay well 🙏🏻
